چکیده

Inuka Kishara Gooneratne, MBBS (Col) Ranjanie Gamage, MD (SL), MRCP (UK) Kamal Shantha Gunarathne, MD (SL) PEARL Thoracic outlet syndrome causing distal subclavian artery disease is a rare cause of arteryto-artery embolic stroke. Brainstem ischemic stroke is a result of compromise to the posterior circulation. This is often due to antegrade embolism from the heart or proximal vessels. Retrograde blood flow has been described in the subclavian artery, thus making the distal subclavian artery a source of possible retrograde embolism.

Periodontal Pockets as a Potential Source of Infection: a Case of Possible Odontogenic Septic Pulmonary Embolism

Although dental foci can be sources of bacteremia and bacterial endocarditis, hematogenous spread of infection presented with septic pulmonary embolism apparently is rare. The occurrence of septic pulmonary embolism in patients with periodontal disease without suppurative thrombophlebitis of the great vessels of the neck is well documented but to our knowledge, there is no report on septic pulm...

Myotonic dystrophy, mitral valve prolapse, and cerebral embolism.

CARDIAC abnormalities are the rule in hereditary myopathy, and myotonic dystrophy (MD) is no exception. Conduction disturbances are most common, manifested by first degree atrioventricular block, intraventricular conductive defect, and by evidence of disease in the entire conductive system on His bundle electrogram. The association between mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and MD has been reported as ...

Acute ischemic stroke from fibrocartilaginous embolism to the middle cerebral artery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Fibrocartilaginous embolism from the nucleus pulposus has been reported as a rare cause of spinal cord ischemia. We were unable to find previous reports of embolism from this source to cerebral arteries. CASE DESCRIPTION A previously healthy 17-year-old girl fell during a basketball game. Left hemiparesis and unresponsiveness developed followed by signs of right uncal h...

Paradoxical cerebral emboli associated with pulmonary arteriovenous shunts: report of three cases.

Paradoxical embolism to the cerebral circulation is rarely diagnosed in life; however, three such cases have recently been observed: two with multiple congenital pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and one with an acquired arteriovenous fistula. In each case the pulmonary lesion(s) were treated by percutaneous balloon embolizations. Paradoxical embolism should be included in the differential ...

Changes over Time in Intracranial Air in Patients with Cerebral Air Embolism: Radiological Study in Two Cases

Cerebral air embolism can be easily identified on computed tomography (CT) scans. However, changes in the distribution and amount of intracranial air are not well known. We report two patients with cerebral air embolism and present imaging findings on the serial changes in the intracranial air. We thought that the embolic source was venous in one patient because CT showed air inflow in cortical...

Teaching NeuroImages: artery-to-artery embolism from a thrombosed cerebral aneurysm.

A 42-year-old man presented with right hemiparesis. Brain imaging showed acute infarction in the left middle cerebral artery territory and a thrombosed aneurysm (figure). Extracranial carotid artery was normal. EKG and echocardiography were normal. Holter monitoring for 24 hours revealed no cardiac source of embolism. Cerebral infarction is a rare complication of unruptured aneurysm.1 The imagi...
